Tunneling Under Tree Roots

Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida is making improvement to 9 holes this summer and some of the improvements include better drainage. But sometimes getting the drain pipes laid out from the golf course past homes to the street presents problems for trees that are near the planned trench. When one homeowner adjacent to the drainage project saw that her trees were going to have their roots cut by the planned drainage trench, she contacted me and we discussed a plan to tunnel beneath the roots to protect her trees. She took my proposal to the Sawgrass management and they agreed to have us locate the tree roots with an Air Spade in the area of the planned trench and then supervise the use of a backhoe to dig around and under the roots.

When the trench has been dug, the drain pipe is inserted undeer the roots.

A backhoe with a small bucket and a skilled operator can dig beside the roots and then under the roots.
